Medium Height Trees
Katsura tree/Cercidiphyllum japonicium
This tree grows at a moderate to rapid rate to between 40’ to 60’ high. It requires sun, moist soil and suffers in hot dry sites. It is pyramidal when young, is full and dense, has great variability with age and stiff arching branches. Leafs are 2 to 4" opposite, simple rounded leaves; new leaves emerge reddish purple; turn blue green in summer; yellow to apricot fall color. It is difficult to transplant, an excellent shade tree with a strong spicy fragrance released just before leaf drop in fall and has some bark peeling with maturity.
